PRESS RELEASE – for immediate release – October 16, 2006 Contact: Charlotte Johnson, Executive Director 401-847-4242 (office), or 401-226-1206 (cell)
The flag at the Rose Island Lighthouse flies at half mast in honor of “Wiggins” the mascot of Rose Island Lighthouse who died of a heart attack the morning of October 12.
Registered with the AKC as “Sir Wiggins of Rose Island”, the 11 year old golden retriever was the half brother of the first Lighthouse mascot “Kelley” who died in 1995. When not at the Lighthouse Wiggins could be seen traveling and walking alongside his lifelong companion and best friend Joe Davis.
Area school children and other visitors to the Lighthouse will fondly remember Wiggins as the friendly and playful golden retriever who followed them around, gleefully jumped into the water to bring back anything they had thrown, and who loved helping them eat their lunches.
"Wiggins was an integral -- and often the favorite -- part of a lighthouse school field trip," said Charlotte Johnson. "His dog house illustrates how rainwater is gathered off the roof, goes down the downspout and is gathered in his dog dish. When the dog house roof is dirty, the children become concerned about the quality of the water in the dog's dish and they offer all sorts of creative suggestions to keep it clean." Johnson explained, "This is one way we teach children to care about the environment - the dog house illustrates the larger water cycle and water quality concerns on a scale children can grasp. It is very effective," she added.
Wiggins was buried at the Lighthouse next to his brother Kelley, facing the prevailing southwest breeze, where they will watch over the lighthouse forever.
